Smartlipo: What You Can Expect

There’s no way around it — fat can be awfully stubborn. If you’ve been cutting calories and sweating it out through exercise, and you’re still left with stubborn pockets of fat, SmartLipo can bridge the gap to your ideal body shape.

At Associates in Obstetrics & Gynecology, our team of women’s health experts understands the unique challenges that women face, from reproductive health issues to the behavior of fat. To help our patients meet their health and wellness goals, which includes their aesthetic goals, we’re equipped with the latest body-sculpting technologies, including Smartlipo by Cynosure.

Here’s a look at what you can expect during and after your Smartlipo procedure.

The new age of liposuction

Traditional liposuction offered a great way to eliminate fat in key areas, but the procedure comes with considerable downtime. With Smartlipo, we combine the effectiveness of liposuction with laser technology in a process known as laser-assisted lipolysis.

During a Smartlipo procedure, we create very small incisions in your target areas, through which we thread a small tube called a cannula. The cannula contains a laser fiber that delivers thermal energy into your fat cells, which melts the fat, making it easier to remove.

Once we’re finished delivering the energy, we remove the disrupted fat cells through gentle suction. And the best part? Once we eliminate these fat cells, they’re gone for good, as your body doesn’t regenerate new fat cells to take their places.

Another benefit of this advanced technology is that the thermal energy we apply with Smartlipo also tightens your skin thanks to a coagulation effect.

After your Smartlipo procedure

We perform your Smartlipo procedure on an outpatient basis right here in our office, which means you’re free to return home afterward. Rest assured, we first use a local anesthetic so you should feel nothing more than a light pressure.

After your procedure, you may experience some discomfort in the form of a dull ache, but this symptom usually resolves itself quickly. In the meantime, you can take an over-the-counter medication like ibuprofen and use cold compresses.

We also suggest that you wear a compression garment over your treatment areas for a week or more.

Your results are both immediate and gradual as your body resettles itself over your slimmer shape. Most of our patients report optimal results in 3-6 months after their Smartlipo treatment, and these results are yours to maintain.

As we mentioned, once your fat cells are eliminated, they don’t regenerate. But be mindful that your existing fat cells can still grow in size, so you should continue to eat a healthy diet and get plenty of exercise.
