da Vinci Surgery

What is da Vinci robotic surgery?

The da Vinci surgery system is a versatile technology that allows Dr. Tubbs to perform even complex gynecologic surgeries without causing unnecessary trauma to your body.

The system uses computer-assisted technology and specialized surgical instruments that Dr. Tubbs controls from a console and typically requires only small incisions to make needed repairs.

What conditions can da Vinci surgery treat?

There are a number of gynecologic conditions Dr. Tubbs at Associates in Obstetrics & Gynecology can treat with the da Vinci system. He recommends surgery only after trying conservative therapies to treat conditions like:

  • Cysts
  • Uterine fibroids
  • Endometriosis

Dr. Tubbs also specializes in da Vinci techniques for pelvic organ prolapse, a condition where your bladder or other pelvic organs slip out of position and fall into the vaginal canal.

You may also be a candidate for da Vinci robotic surgery if you need a hysterectomy. A hysterectomy is the removal of your uterus and possibly other reproductive organs. This type of procedure may be necessary if you have endometriosis or recurrent fibroids not treatable with conservative therapies if you have cancer or abnormal bleeding.

What happens during da Vinci surgery?

During most da Vinci robotic surgeries, Dr. Tubbs only needs to make a few small incisions over the treatment area to access abnormal growths or make repairs. Through an incision, he inserts a laparoscope, a slender instrument that has an attached camera and light. The camera sends back real-time, 3D images of the surgical site to an external monitor, which Dr. Tubbs watches throughout the procedure.

Using the controls on the computer console to manipulate specialized surgical tools, Dr. Tubbs performs the surgery, removing abnormal tissue or growths or making repairs to your pelvic floor to treat prolapse. He can also remove your uterus and other reproductive structures through the same small incisions during a hysterectomy.

What are the benefits of da Vinci surgery?

Following your surgery, the small incisions ensure you heal faster than you might after traditional open surgery that requires longer incisions.

With the da Vinci technique, you can also reduce your risks for:

  • Pain
  • Bleeding
  • Infection

With only small incisions to heal and less trauma to your body, you can expect to get back to your regular activities in a shorter period of time than you would with open surgery.
